WNC Voices: An Elderly Gentlemen's Story
Grace by Example has been given the privilege to help elderly gentleman whose home was flooded out on the South Toe River during Hurricane Helene.

The Journey Behind
The elderly gentleman lost his wife about a year ago, so he was living in his house by himself. He had lived in the location for over 40 years. The house was a 3 bedroom with 2 bath home that was completely flooded by Helene. He is currently living with family members about an hour from his home.
The Aftermath
The elderly gentlemen's destroyed home is over an acre and is located right on the river. The house has been condemned and the County will not allow a new house to be built (or the current home remodeled) in the current location and there is not enough higher ground for a new house site.
Holding on, Moving Forward
When we talked to the elderly gentleman, he reminisced that his land was a lovely setting before the flood! He wants to remain in the area since he is in his upper 70’s and all his friends live in the South Toe River area.
His new home is being built on high ground away from river in the the South Toe River Community.
