The Journey Behind
Albert and Sylvia Badschild built Albert’s Lodge at Mt. Mitchell Golf Course, which was later destroyed in the storm. Thankfully, they were staying with their daughter Vanessa at the time. Albert has since passed, and Sylvia, now in Hospice care, continues to live with Vanessa due to her medical needs.
The Aftermath
The loss of the home, coupled with no flood insurance or equity, left the family with limited resources. Sylvia requires full-time care, which Vanessa has taken on while also raising her two teenage sons.

Holding on, Moving Forward
To care for Sylvia, a home addition is underway at Vanessa’s. Tree removal was completed in May 2025, with grading and foundation work beginning in June. We’re grateful to Providence Church for helping with bills, and we ask for your continued thoughts and prayers for Vanessa and her family.
