Post Hurricane Helene—505 days since Hurricane Helene impacted western North Carolina, resulting in significant destruction to 73,000 homes and a damage assessment of $59.6 billion dollars. https://www.osbm.nc.gov/hurricane-helene-dna/open page 5
Today is Valentine’s Day but it is also day 505 since Hurricane Helene and I am so very grateful for the work that is being done in western NC. Grace By Example is thankful for the privilege to serve families that have been dealt a lot of "bad cards".
So, as I sit at my table this morning I think about the word “authentic” and what that means in what is said and done. It is very hard to see families who are experiencing a ten-year recovery process and in the present are still living in campers or in rental properties that they cannot call home.
Families that feel isolated and forgotten because they have received very little governmental or insurance assistance. These families are in desperate need of people willing to come alongside them and walk with them until they can climb out of the pit. Many of these people struggle to take help because until the disaster they would be the very people who “gave” help.
Grace By Example maintains a strong prayerful commitment to support families in need. Verses like Matthew 22:36-39 and Matthew 14:16 continue to be the driving force of the work of Grace By Example.
The Grace By Example team is finding in working within a faith based charity nonprofit that serves people who have experienced catastrophic loss of property and more importantly in some cases the loss of family members one must learn to live verses such as Isaiah 40:31 “wait on the Lord and His timing” or Galatians 6:9 “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will receive a harvest if we do not give up.”
We hope that one will continue to pray for the people of Western North Carolina as well as all the other places in the US and around the world that have experienced catastrophic destruction and loss of life.
In closing one is to be reminded that in Matthew 14:16 Jesus, told the disciples not to send the people away, but he said, “YOU give them something to eat”. The way people are truly helped in these types of situations is developing and building trust through transformational relations where volunteers, churches, businesses and organizations walk beside an impacted person or family. Trust must be earned but through honesty, integrity, and “showing up” a foundation is formed that undergirds transformational relationships, where actions are far more important than words.
