As I sit at my desk this evening it has been 451 days since Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. The storm caused 73,000 homes to be damaged, and an estimated 59 billion dollar deficit has been incurred, once all government and insurance funds have been distributed.
I returned this afternoon from the Spruce Pines and Burnsville areas of Western North Carolina. There are many things to be grateful for. Numerous efforts are being made in many of the small mountain communities. Many individuals have chosen to walk with families as Jesus walks with us. A “service before self-attitude” can be found throughout the small mountain hollars! As an example of two families that GBE has been given the precious privilege to walk with as their homes are rebuilt are now grateful to see these houses “ dried in” and moving forward.
It is also important to realize there is so much work to be done. Grace By Example has recently received the privilege of helping and walking alongside a family whose mobile home was destroyed by a tree falling through their home and have been living in a camping trailer. https://vimeo.com/1148816400?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci
